The photograph is a medley of various features and symbolism.
‘’The mask of apparent reticence and nonchalance. - The purpose of art is to conceal one’s self.’’
This is figuratively speaking and does not relate only to the mask itself but is also a reference to sprezzatura. However, the play between the words and the mask is actually quite compatible as the Bauta mask was designed to hide one’s identity completely. It hides not only one’s face but one’s social status as well. The beak-like projection of its lower part allows people wearing it to eat and drink without taking it off, and also to modify their own voice. therefore it blends quite well with the well-known postulate; that the purpose of art is to conceal one’s self.
